Belinda Moffitt – Portraits – Oil – demo – March 27, 2023
A people-loving introvert, Belinda has always been drawn to faces and feelings. Raised by parents who led with their love for each other and their children, she was taught early that people matter, a focus that has fueled her direction in art and life.
Although funds were tight during childhood and the small Oregon coastal town of her upbringing didn’t boast galleries or museums, her creative parents encouraged her artistic heart. Both musicians themselves, they understood Belinda’s drive to create and encouraged her with art supplies, and even an easel in the laundry room — her first studio. Belinda’s early art pursuits were full of drawings and even a childhood art sale, but applying her work ethic to her desire for expression came later, along with shift to learning as an artist.
For a time in her early twenties, Belinda’s artistic journey took the form of hairdressing with people again as the focus. Listening, helping, and seeing them while drawing out their beauty. The next stage of her life was a deep dive into truly seeing people through two decades of overseas work and education. A degree in intercultural study laid the foundation for over fifteen years of humanitarian effort in the Philippines, where each encounter showed her anew the value of the human experience and each individual’s emotional journey. This time was full of hard work – heart work – and her art was put on hold for quite a few years. With prompting from her husband, Josh, and the Filipino art community in which she’d found inspiration and mentorship, she jumped back into art in 2016 and hasn’t looked back since.
While workshops taught by local Filipino artists introduced her to new techniques and contributed to her style and voice, most influential was the guidance of Alfred Galvez. From him, Belinda was introduced to the classical method of painting she employs today. In this style, a black and white rendition is laid down on canvas, followed by many transparent layers of color. A time-tested technique, it achieves a realistic, almost velvety glow. The detail and time involved in this method gives Belinda a chance to get to know her subject, which further shapes her work. The smallest details and feelings are captured and coaxed out of the canvas, inviting viewers to share in each story.
Belinda was honored to have her first exhibits alongside the Filipino art community while still living in the Philippines, and since moving back to America she has continued to exhibit in her home state of Oregon, where she now lives with her family. Private commissions also give Belinda the opportunity to get to know her subjects individually and bring comfort and joy to the recipients of her paintings.
Through portraiture, Belinda strives to capture the beauty of each face and connect to the story behind it, truly seeing and celebrating every subject.

Ryan Moon – juried critique – July 24, 2023
As a second generation immigrant, Ryan has been blessed to call Southern Oregon his home for nearly four decades. Growing up in the Valley has inspired him to pursue many creative opportunities to showcase our diverse cultures and led him to found Marrow Collective, a group of artists focused on advancing the movement of the local art scene. During his youth, Ryan graduated from the Southern Oregon Academy of Art and shortly after became a painting instructor for the institution. He currently works out of his painting studio in Downtown Medford curating large-scale arts exhibitions and teaching private courses. From the beautiful and vivacious shows that he organizes to the meaningful connections he fosters with his students, he is a true patron of the creative arts in our area.

Charlotte Peterson – Watercolor demo – September 25, 2023
When asked to give a demo, I didn’t give much thought of what I would demo. Most people have a recognizable style which I think I have established but my subject matter has been diverse. People often say “Oh you’re the artist that does the old vintage cars? You’re the artist that does florals with words in the background? You’re the Frog painter?”
Now I am asking, “What do people most often ask “How do you do that?” So that is what I will demo.
Years ago, when I started entering juried shows a juror told me if I was to hope to get into shows especially with floral paintings, I needed to do something that catches the viewer’s eye and they ask, “How do you suppose she does that?” So, I will try to demo a very time consuming process in a short period of time: An object with words in the back ground. I use transparent watercolor on Arches 300# usually.

Sylvia Trujillo – October 23, 2023
Critiquing art can be very subjective, however I strive to be objective in that a variety of art principals are present. The first principle I look for, and the one that stands out above all, is composition. There are many factors to a pleasing composition; to me it is the underlying structure of a successful painting. If the overall composition is not a strong one, the painting will not hold the eye of the viewer, no matter how skillfully rendered the painting is. Whether the art is realistic, impressionistic, or nonobjective, I will either be attracted to it immediately or not. This helps me in choosing what I think are winning works.
Silvia Trujillo is an artist and an art instructor originally from West Hollywood, California. She began studying art through fashion design in the 1970s, then turned her focus to fine art and painting in the 80s. Studying with a series of notable artist instructors including Wayne Theibaud, Terry Miura, Suchitra Bohsle, and Susan Sarback, Trujillo now continues to expand, experiment, explore, and move in new directions with her creations.
Trujillo paintings have appeared in the Crocker Art Museum, the California State Capitol-Office of the Governor, and the Haggin Art Museum. Corporate and private collectors throughout North & South America, Asia, and Europe are proud owners of her work.
Silvia travels frequently in search of new landscapes and subjects to paint. One weekend may find her in a remote cabin on the Oregon Coast, the next in Napa Valley. She loves plein air painting; her particular passions are water, earth, sky, fields, and florals. Trujillo lives in Southern Oregon, where she is active in the local art scene. When she isn’t painting or teaching art, she enjoys reading, listening to music, and studying spirituality.
My thoughts on critique:
